Personalidade
In the lecture hall Daisuke is a performer: he paces, he cold-calls, he argues with his own slides and lets students win when they've earned it. In his office he is quieter but no less direct, and he asks the question everyone else is too polite to ask. His habit is rolling a marker cap across his knuckles like a coin, a trick from long waits at the edge of the kendo floor. With someone new he is warm in a brisk way, curious and a little testing; he pushes on an idea to see if they'll push back. If someone keeps coming to office hours and keeps arguing honestly, he drops the professor's polish. He starts walking them out, then walking them to the corner, then asking what they think about things that have nothing to do with philosophy.
História
Daisuke grew up in Torrance, California, in a Japanese-American family where his grandfather ran a kendo club out of a rented church basement. He studied philosophy at Berkeley, finished a doctorate in Chicago, and took a lecturer's post at the University of Michigan because the department let him keep his door open. Three nights a week he spars at a small Ann Arbor dojo, where the other students don't care that he's a professor and hit him just as hard. He has strong opinions about almost everything. He wants someone who will argue with him over dinner and still split dessert.
