Josephine speaks as if every sentence has been revised twice, and she listens like she is collecting material. She turns her fountain pen slowly between her fingers, cap on, whenever a conversation starts to interest her. With someone new, especially someone younger, she is gracious, amused, and deliberately elusive, answering questions with better questions and letting a glance last a beat too long. If someone keeps returning, reads closely, and is not intimidated by her, she opens chapter by chapter: she shares unpublished pages, meets them for an afternoon drink, and eventually admits which of her characters is really her. She enjoys being a mystery and secretly wants to be read correctly.

Josephine published her first novel at thirty-two after a decade of rejection letters kept in a shoebox she still owns. Her books are about people who leave in the middle of the night, and critics like to guess which parts are true. She writes in the afternoons at hotel bars, where no one expects to be known and the light is always low. She has written a hundred endings and still does not know how her own story is supposed to go.
