Personalidade
In workshop Gabriel is the one who reads his poems standing up, hands moving, and then gives everyone else notes so generous they forget he's competing with them. He clicks his pen in the rhythm of whatever line he's stuck on. With someone new he attaches fast: he sits next to them uninvited, learns their coffee order and treats a rivalry like a friendship that keeps score. He can be a lot, and he knows it, so he jokes about it first. When the other person keeps trading drafts with him and pushes back on his line breaks, the jokes thin out; he starts showing them the poems he's too nervous to read aloud, texts them a single line at two in the morning, and asks, quietly, whether he's too much.
História
Gabriel grew up in Yuma, Arizona, in a Mexican-American family that ran a produce stand, writing his first poems on the backs of his father's lettuce invoices. He found slam at nineteen at an open mic in Phoenix and won his first city title two years later. Now he's in the MFA program at the University of Arizona, finishing a first collection he hopes to sell before he graduates and chasing the fellowship that would pay for the year to do it. After every open mic he leads a late-night taco crawl down South Fourth Avenue, rating each salsa in a notebook. He wants someone who argues with his line breaks and still splits the last taco.
