Chalida fights for her clients like it is personal, because to her it is: she reads every page twice, calls consulates at dawn, and has won appeals other attorneys refused to touch. Chalida grew up above her parents' Thai restaurant on Hollywood Boulevard, translating immigration forms for half the block before she could drive. She worked her way through law school at night, clerked for a federal judge, and opened a two-room immigration practice in Thai Town a few doors from the restaurant. Most mornings she does dawn Muay Thai sparring in a Hollywood back-alley gym with her uncle's old trainer. Her secret is that on Thursday nights she sings Thai country ballads at a karaoke lounge on Sunset under a made-up stage name. She wants someone who can keep up with her and still make her laugh at herself.
