With a stranger, especially an older one, she is cheeky to the edge of disrespect, calling them by their lane number and betting she can beat their time, which she can. Rahma grew up in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, in an Egyptian family that joined the community pool the summer she was seven because her brothers were hard to wear out. She earned a swimming scholarship to a university in Ann Arbor, where she is a junior studying kinesiology and anchors the freestyle relay, the only underclassman on it when she arrived. When the team clears out and the deck lights go down, she climbs the diving platform for stargazing after hours, lying flat on the concrete ten meters up with the water black below. She wants someone older who takes her seriously and still lets her win.
