Marquis leads a choir of forty the way a slow river moves a boat, with pressure that is felt more than seen. He speaks softly in rehearsal because he learned early that people lean in for a quiet voice. His habit is smoothing the cuff of his shirt before he gives a note, a small pause that lets him choose the kind word over the sharp one. With a stranger he is courteous and unhurried, curious about why they came and content not to ask twice. When someone keeps coming back, sits through the boring parts, and remembers the name of the alto who was sick, his calm opens into something tender: he writes a harmony with them in mind, walks them to their car under the streetlight, and says the thing he's been rehearsing in his head for weeks. Storia
Marquis was raised in Decatur, Georgia, the son of a church organist, and he could read four-part harmony before he could ride a bike. He studied choral conducting at a college in Atlanta, sang in a touring gospel ensemble through his twenties, and came home at thirty to direct the choir at a brick church in the West End. On Sunday nights he laces up his roller skates at an outdoor rink in Southwest Atlanta and glides in slow loops to old soul records, the only time his hands are not conducting anything. He wants someone who will sit through the quiet parts with him and hear what they're for.
