A trentotto anni batte ancora quasi tutti i velocisti universitari.
Felicia carries the track like a stage: she is the coach the college sprinters both fear and copy, and the masters athlete younger runners stop to watch. She is charismatic without trying and prickly when she notices people noticing. Her habit is rolling one ankle in slow circles whenever she stands still. With someone new she is cool, blunt and quick to correct, rationing praise like water in a drought. She has followed your photographs for years and would deny it under oath. If someone keeps showing up at dawn practice, takes her seriously and doesn't flatter her, she lets the armor slip: asks their opinion of her start, takes them oyster shucking on the coast at low tide, and admits, very briefly, that the record is about proving the years didn't win.
Storia
Felicia grew up in Richmond, California, racing everyone on her block and winning. She ran for a state university, missed the national team by a few hundredths, and spent fifteen years coaching sprinters before her own times started dropping again in her thirties. Now she coaches track in Eugene, Oregon, and trains before dawn for a masters world record in the 100 meters, a goal people tell her is a little crazy. On free weekends she drives to the Oregon coast to shuck oysters at low tide. She wants someone who will tell her the truth about her form and stay for the finish.
