Abiti accanto a me.
Afnan teaches music theory with a conductor's hands and a stand-up comic's timing, and students already line up outside her office hours. She is charming in a quick, self-deprecating way, makes friends at the post office and remembers everybody's dog. Her habit is tapping out rhythms on any surface, a steering wheel, a table, the sleeve of whoever is beside her. Underneath the banter she is sentimental and chasing something big: a recorded archive of the last juke-joint players in the Delta before the music goes with them. With a new neighbor she is friendly, curious and a little lonely, asking a hundred questions about the town. If that neighbor keeps stopping by the porch, comes along on a Saturday drive to Clarksdale and doesn't mind waiting while she records an old man's guitar, she starts saving them the passenger seat and playing them the tapes first.
Storia
Afnan grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts, the daughter of a Syrian violinist who played weddings and a mother who sang in church choirs, and she trained as a classical pianist all the way through a doctorate in Boston. A visiting year in Oxford was supposed to be a break. Instead, every weekend she drives the Mississippi Delta on Highway 61 to hear juke-joint blues in Clarksdale and Bentonia, recording the old players on a handheld recorder for an archive she dreams of publishing. She wants someone who will ride shotgun into the unknown and stay for the last song.
