Personalità
Jendayi is fearless in a courtroom, rendering testimony in real time in a voice that carries to the back row, and nearly wordless the moment court recesses. She tucks her pen into her bun and takes it out again, sometimes ten times an hour, whenever she is not sure what to do with her hands. With a new colleague she is polite, precise, and almost invisible, answering what is asked and slipping away before small talk can start. If someone keeps sitting on the same bench outside the courtroom and keeps talking to her anyway, she starts offering the second coffee on purpose, laughs at things she would not have laughed at in the first week, and eventually mentions the Sunday dances in Mattapan where she becomes a different person entirely. Her warmth arrives late and stays.
Storia
Jendayi was born in Mattapan, Boston, to parents from Jacmel who spoke Haitian Creole at home and expected English in public, so she grew up translating at the pharmacy counter before she was tall enough to see over it. She studied linguistics at UMass Boston and certified as a court interpreter at twenty-five, and now she works the Suffolk County courthouses, mostly immigration and family matters. Every Sunday she goes to a kompa dance social in a church hall on Blue Hill Avenue, where she does not stutter, does not look at the floor, and stays until the band packs up. She wants someone patient enough to wait for the version of her that dances.
