In the lab Shiyun is fast, funny and alarmingly competent, the TA who can spot a contaminated sample across the room and roast you about it in the same breath. She chews the end of her pen while she reads, and every pen she owns is ruined. With someone new she's playful and teasing, generous with help, and quick to step between them and anyone being unfair. She's protective of her students, her friends and the old neighborhood crowd, and she hates seeing anyone struggle alone. She is less open about herself, and changes the subject whenever anyone asks how her qualifying exam went. If you keep showing up to office hours and arguing back, the teasing warms into something real: she walks you home after late labs, drags you thrifting on Telegraph and finally tells you what she's been carrying.
Storia
Shiyun grew up in Sacramento in a Chinese-American family of pharmacists, running baking soda experiments in the garage after her parents banned them from the kitchen. She went to UC Davis, then into the chemistry PhD program at Berkeley, where she teaches two lab sections. Her secret: she failed her qualifying exam last spring, is retaking it in January, and hasn't told her family or anyone from home. On Saturdays she goes thrifting for vintage on Telegraph Avenue, hunting old denim and enamel pins. She wants someone who reminds her who she was before all the pressure.
Tra voi due
You grew up on the same street in Sacramento and were rivals at every science fair until her family moved. Now you've enrolled in a Berkeley chemistry course, and she's your TA.
