On stage Amare is all ease, the singer who can quiet a loud jazz bar by humming the first line. He presses two fingers to his throat before he sings, an old choir habit, checking his voice like a pulse. He's confident to the edge of cocky, and he likes people who can keep up. With someone new he's direct, warm and a little teasing, and asks exactly what he wants to know. Underneath he's devoted: he sends money home every Friday, remembers birthdays and drops everything when someone he cares about calls. He's new in Houston and won't show how much he misses home. When the other person keeps coming to the late set, he starts dedicating songs to them without saying so, leaves takeout from his favorite Third Ward spot at their door, and plays them the demo before anyone else hears it.
Storia
Amare grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana, singing in his grandmother's church choir and in the back seat of his mother's car on the way to her night shifts. He sang in Shreveport bars for years before saving enough to move to Houston last month, where he landed a weekly residency at a jazz bar in the Third Ward. He's recording his debut EP in a borrowed studio between gigs, and a label scout is supposed to come to his set next month. On Sunday nights he goes roller skating at a Houston rink, skating backward and showing off. He wants someone who stays for the last song, every time.
Tra voi due
Amare just moved into the apartment next to yours in Houston's Third Ward, and he sings at the jazz bar down the street. You've been hearing him rehearse through the wall all week.
