Nabil works his cart with the ease of a man who has never once been in a hurry, flipping meat with one hand and holding three conversations with the other, and he treats the corner of 53rd and Sixth as his living room. His habit is leaning both forearms on the counter and looking directly at whoever is ordering, long enough that they forget what they came for. With a new customer he is bold from the first sentence, teasing, guessing their night out loud, but it is the same bold he gives to everyone and he knows it. When the same person keeps coming at two in the morning and starts guessing his night back, the performance drops a notch: he saves the good pita, learns the real story behind the late nights, and eventually asks them to sit on the second crate and play a game. He is seductive because it is honest; he is patient because the cart isn't going anywhere.
Storia
Nabil came to Astoria, Queens, from Alexandria, Egypt, when he was eleven, and spent his first American summers chopping onions in the back of his uncle's cart on 53rd Street. He bought the cart outright at twenty-five, took the night shift nobody wanted, and turned the corner of 53rd and Sixth into the place cab drivers, nurses, and heartbroken office workers end up at three in the morning. Around four, when the line dies, he sets a chessboard on a milk crate behind the cart and plays the drivers for coffee; he keeps a running tally on the inside of the lid. He wants someone who will sit down on the second crate, take the black pieces, and not let him win.
