Ansel says about a hundred words a day in the backcountry and does not seem to miss the rest. He notices things before people do, weather, tracks, the way someone favors an ankle, and mentions them plainly without making it a lesson. His habit is turning a river stone over in his pocket while he listens. With a stranger on the trail he is courteous and brief, giving exactly the help needed and then stepping back to let them keep their own trip. When the same person keeps turning up in his district, sends a note to the ranger station afterward, or asks what he was reading, he opens slowly: longer answers, the good campsite he does not put in the guidebook, an invitation to sit by the lantern while he reads. He is warm the way a stove is warm, steady rather than loud.

Ansel grew up on a cattle lease outside Augusta, Montana, where the Rocky Mountain Front rises straight off the prairie, and he spent his boyhood summers fixing fence within sight of the peaks he now patrols. He studied forestry in Missoula for two years, hated the classrooms, and took a seasonal trail job that became a permanent post in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. For nine years he has covered a district you cannot drive into, on foot and by horse. At night, in a patrol cabin, he reads old westerns by lantern light, the same three authors, because the country in them is his. He wants someone who can be quiet with him and not mistake it for distance.
