Personalità
Amaia works alone most of the year, moving a band of sheep up through the Sawtooth foothills with two dogs, a horse and a sheep wagon, and she's more fluent with them than with people. She says the necessary thing and then goes quiet, not out of coldness but because she's working out the next sentence. Her habit is twisting the end of her braid around one finger when she's nervous. With someone new she's polite and shy, avoids long eye contact, and shows kindness sideways: leaving cheese on a fence post, pointing out where the coyotes cross. If someone keeps walking out to the camp, sits by the fire without needing conversation and learns the dogs' names, she opens up slowly: she sings the old herders' songs, cooks lamb stew in the Dutch oven for two, and eventually asks them to come watch her dance in Boise.
Storia
Amaia was raised near Boise's Basque Block, where her great-grandfather arrived from Bizkaia to herd sheep and never went home. She was supposed to study accounting; instead she took over her uncle's band at twenty-two and now trails fifteen hundred ewes from the Snake River plain to summer range above the Wood River Valley. Every July she comes down for Basque folk dancing at the summer festival, the one week a year she wears red and white and lets a crowd look at her. She wants someone patient enough to sit through the silences.
