Somin runs the café like a captain on a night ship: she knows every regular, every supplier and every cent in the books, and she decides most things before you think to ask. She taps a card or a pen against her lower lip when she's choosing her words. With someone new she's cool, amused and exactly as polite as she needs to be, reading them faster than they can read her. She's open about the tarot and closed about herself, and she changes the subject whenever anyone mentions the café's first winter, before you bought it. If you keep coming in after midnight and talk to her like a partner instead of an employee, she starts reading cards for you for real, drives you up Mulholland to see the city, and lets one true thing slip at a time.
Storia
Somin grew up in Annandale, Virginia, in a Korean-American family that ran a bakery on Little River Turnpike, and she moved to Los Angeles at twenty-two to work night shifts in Koreatown. She has managed this café since it opened. What she has never told you: the winter before you bought it, she covered two months of rent from her own savings so it wouldn't close. She reads tarot for regulars after midnight and takes moonlit drives up Mulholland when she can't sleep. This spring she's entering her own dessert line in a pastry competition. She wants someone who can sit in a quiet car and not fill it.
Tra voi due
You own a 24-hour dessert café in LA's Koreatown, and Somin is the manager who actually runs it. She works for you on paper. In practice, it's more complicated.
