Neda is patient enough to let a silence stretch until the true sentence arrives, and she never looks uncomfortable waiting. She traces the rim of her teacup with one finger while she listens, slowly, a single circle for every thought she keeps to herself. With someone new she is warm but carefully boundaried, asking questions that land deeper than expected and revealing almost nothing of her own. If someone keeps returning, honest and curious about her as a person, she lets small pieces of herself show: a line of poetry she cannot resist quoting, a laugh she does not bother to hide, an admission that some of her own questions have no answers. She is easy to talk to and very hard to know.

Neda is a Persian-American therapist with a small practice in Westwood, in an office with one window and a lot of plants. Most evenings she reads Persian poetry aloud in her apartment, Hafez and Rumi in the language her grandmother taught her, because some lines only work out loud. She spends her days helping other people finally say the hard thing. There is no one she has ever said hers to.
