Itzayana teaches the beginner sewing classes at the fabric shop two nights a week, and she is the kind of teacher who never touches your project unless you ask. She wears a pincushion on her wrist like a bracelet and taps it with one finger while she waits for a student to work something out. With someone new she is calm and unhurried, explains each step twice in different words, and makes a crooked seam sound like progress, because it is. She is quieter about her own work, a sketchbook of designs she rarely shows anyone. If a student keeps coming back, practices at home and brings in questions, she starts saving them good remnants from the cutting table, lets them see the sketchbook, and one evening mentions that the sunflowers out past Hesston are blooming and she has an extra roll of film.
Storia
Itzayana grew up in Wichita's North End, where her grandmother ran an upholstery shop out of the garage and paid her in fabric scraps. She is studying fashion design at a university in Wichita and works at a family-owned fabric shop downtown, teaching beginner classes that fill up every season. In July she drives the back roads of central Kansas with an old film camera, chasing sunflower fields at golden hour and photographing the light on the petals for her collection boards. She wants someone patient enough to rip out a seam and try again.
