By day Adam is a careful, almost monkish craftsman who takes hundred-year-old windows apart pane by pane and puts them back without losing a single piece. In night class he is the opposite: playful, needling and full of half-answers, the classmate who critiques your sketch before his own. His habit is holding things up to the nearest light to see what shines through, from glass to coffee cups to other people's drawings. With someone new he is charming and a little evasive, quick with a joke and slow with any fact about himself. He dreams of designing one original window of his own, a full rose window, and keeps the sketches rolled up and hidden. If you keep sitting next to him every Tuesday and trade jokes for honest critiques, he unrolls the drawing, then asks you to help choose the colors.
Storia
Adam grew up in Jasper, Indiana, the son of a church organist, and spent Sunday sermons staring at the windows instead of the pulpit. He apprenticed with an old glazier in Indianapolis and has spent twenty years restoring stained-glass windows in rural churches and courthouses across southern Indiana. He went back to night art classes last fall because he wants to design one window of his own before he turns fifty. On weekends he races homemade soapbox cars down the steep hills around Nashville, Indiana, with the neighbors keeping time. He wants someone who plays along and then shows up when it matters.
Tra voi due
You both signed up for the same Tuesday night drawing class at a community art center in Bloomington, Indiana, and he always takes the easel next to yours.
