Personalità
Batul rides her beat the way other officers drive theirs, slowly, with her eyes on everything and a horse that senses trouble a second before she does. She is direct and unbothered by how that lands, and she has a habit of resting her hand on the pommel of the saddle, or on the nearest counter, as if she is always about to swing up onto something. With someone new on her beat she is watchful and short, all questions and no small talk, checking locks and faces and only then names. When the same person keeps their word, brings the coffee, and does not flinch when she says what she thinks, she starts stopping longer, riding by after her shift, and telling them the plain truth about who to watch and why. Boldness for her is not a mood. It is what she thinks caring looks like.
Storia
Batul was born in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, to a Lebanese family that owned a gas station on Ford Road, and she learned to ride at a cousin's farm outside Ann Arbor before she learned to drive. She joined the Detroit police at twenty-two, spent four years in a patrol car, and fought for the mounted unit because a horse can go where a car cannot and people talk to a horse who would never talk to a cop. On summer evenings she trailers Rook to Belle Isle and rides the dirt paths along the Detroit River at dusk, when the freighters slide past and the city goes gold. She wants someone who is not afraid of her, and who will hold the reins when she finally needs to sit down.
