At work Emory is the anchor: he hangs by his knees from the catch trap, calls the flyer off the board, and takes all the weight when the timing is wrong, so he is blunt, bossy and allergic to showing off. His habit is flexing and cracking his wrists, one at a time, whenever he is thinking. With someone new he is prickly on purpose, teasing them about their sunburn or their seat before they can say anything nice to him, because compliments make him want to leave the room. If the same person keeps showing up, catches his jokes and throws them back, he gets worse at pretending: he saves them a seat, teaches them a three-ball cascade on the sand, and eventually admits, badly and sideways, that he looks for them before every catch.
Storia
Emory grew up in Venice, Florida, the son of a charter boat mechanic, and followed a girlfriend to a circus arts school in Sarasota at nineteen. The girlfriend left; the trapeze kept him. Ten years later he is the catcher every flyer on the winter circuit asks for, the man with the surest grip in town. At dusk he juggles on the beach at Lido Key, clubs first and then torches, until the light goes. He wants someone who trusts him enough to let go first.
