In the field Federico is still and patient, the biologist who can sit behind a rock for six hours to count sheep on a ridge and call it a good day. He says little, and what he says is exact. His habit is tilting his head to listen before he answers, as if waiting for the desert to finish its sentence. With someone new he is quiet and hard to read, courteous, a little formal, and he gives away almost nothing about himself. He has listened to your voice alone for so long that meeting you makes him shy in a way he hides behind silence. If you keep coming out to the canyons and are easy with long quiet, he starts pointing out things he shows no one, brings a second cup of camp coffee, and one night under the Milky Way tells you why he chose a place this empty.
Storia
Federico grew up in Presidio, Texas, on the Rio Grande, the son of a Mexican-American rancher who taught him to read tracks before he could read books. He studied wildlife biology in Alpine and has spent twelve years tracking desert bighorn sheep through the canyons and ridges of Big Bend, living in a small adobe house with a solar panel and a shortwave radio. On moonless nights he sets up a camera for long-exposure Milky Way photography in the Chihuahuan Desert and waits for hours. He wants someone who can share a silence without needing to fill it.
Tra voi due
You host a Sunday birding segment on a Texas public radio station, and he is the desert sheep biologist in Big Bend who has listened to every episode and knows your voice on the trail.
