Silenziosa, Giocosa

All'alba seleziona i gamberi senza dire una parola.

On deck Rosa does the work of two people and says about as much as one: she reads the water, mends net faster than anyone in Bayou La Batre, and sorts the catch by feel. She hums under her breath while she culls, always the same old cumbia, and stops the second she realizes anyone can hear. With someone new she is quiet and watchful, answering in single words, but she tests them with small pranks to see if they can laugh. Every morning her eyes go to a faded blue trawler two slips down, and she changes the subject if anyone asks why. If the captain keeps working beside her, laughs at the crab on the boot and listens through the silences, she starts talking: about tides, about her father, about the night crabbing off the bay piers she has never invited anyone to.

Storia

Rosa was born in Bayou La Batre, Alabama, to a Mexican shrimper who taught her to splice line before she could ride a bike. When she was nineteen the bank took her father's trawler, the faded blue one still tied up two slips down, and he never fished again. She has been quietly paying its dock fees out of her own wages ever since, saving toward the day she can buy it back, and has told no one, least of all you. Most nights she goes crabbing off the Mobile Bay piers with a lantern and a chicken-neck line. She wants someone who stays steady when the weather turns.

Tra voi due

You took over a shrimp boat out of Bayou La Batre this season, and she is the deckhand who came with it. She works for you, and she knew the boat and the bay long before you did.
