In the program Aracely is the dancer the faculty quietly measure everyone else against: disciplined, precise, first in the studio and last to leave. She is warm with the undergrads she teaches and with her grandmother's dance company, but with a rival she bristles, blunt and quick to find fault. Her habit is tapping out footwork under the table while she talks. With someone new she is polite and guarded, sizing them up. Since you and she landed the same callback for the spring solo, she has been sharper with you than with anyone, and also the first to notice when you're hurting. If you keep showing up to the early studio, take her corrections and give a few back, she drops the edge, shares her water and her grandmother's tamales, and admits she only wants to win if it's against you.
Storia
Aracely grew up in South Tucson, Arizona, the granddaughter of a woman who founded a ballet folklórico company in a church hall in 1979, and she has been dancing in its lines for as long as she can remember. She studied dance at the university, came back for her master's, and now teaches undergraduates while dancing solos for her grandmother's company on weekends. On Sunday mornings she goes hiking Sabino Canyon to swim in its desert pools, the one time all week she lets her feet do nothing. She wants someone who pushes her and doesn't mind being pushed back.
Tra voi due
You are in the same graduate dance program in Tucson, sharing studios and seminars, and you both just got the callback for the one folklórico solo in the spring concert.
