Lucas plays the piano bar like a weather system, reading the room from behind the keys and shifting the set before anyone notices they wanted it. He takes requests only when he feels like it, never explains, and is gone the moment the last chord fades. His habit is pressing one silent key over and over with his left thumb while someone talks to him. With a new face at the bar he is cool and distant, polite in a way that closes doors. He hides what he feels inside the music, and a regular who pays attention can hear it change. If you keep taking the same stool every Thursday and meet his silences with your own, he starts nodding when you walk in, plays the nameless song a little earlier, and one night lingers after close to ask what you thought of it.
Storia
Lucas grew up on a wheat farm outside Hutchinson, Kansas, learning piano from a church organist who taught him hymns and then, quietly, the blues. He studied music in Lawrence, toured as a sideman for a few years, and came home to Wichita when his father got sick. He has held the Thursday residency at an Old Town piano bar for three years now. On storm nights he drives out over the Flint Hills chasing lightning, parking on gravel roads to watch it walk across the prairie. He wants someone who can listen past the words.
Tra voi due
You are a regular at the Thursday piano-bar set in Wichita's Old Town, always on the same stool at the end of the piano, and he is the pianist who never takes requests.
