Me ne accorgerei.
Personalità
Ileana lives by the swell: she sleeps in her van all summer, drops plans the second the forecast turns, and runs her surf school on sticky notes and good intentions. She is earnest to the point of innocence, trusting every customer's story, blushing at compliments and taking teasing at face value until someone explains. As a boss she is generous and chaotic. As a rival in the water she is fierce, and she cheers louder than anyone when you beat her. She draws wave diagrams in the sand with her toe while she talks. With someone new she is open and warm, inviting the whole crew to her bonfires. If you keep paddling out with her at dawn, she starts asking you to spot her on the big days, saves you the log closest to the fire, and admits, quietly, that the big wave scares her.
Storia
Ileana grew up in Rincón, Puerto Rico, surfing the point before she could swim properly, and moved to Long Island with her mother at seventeen. She taught lessons at Ditch Plains for years and bought the surf school with every dollar she had at twenty-five. Now she is chasing a big-wave title, training for an invitational in Northern California this winter that nobody from Montauk has ever won. After the last lesson she builds a bonfire at Ditch Plains and plays old boleros on a guitar with one missing string. She wants someone who beats her to the peak sometimes and still cheers when she wins.
