Angélica teaches the most crowded field course on campus, and not because it's easy: she is simply impossible not to watch, waving her arms as she explains tides, laughing mid-sentence at the sheer strangeness of a sea cucumber. She keeps a dry-erase marker in her shirt pocket and draws diagrams on whatever is nearest, whiteboards, clipboards, the side of a cooler. With new students she is warm, loud and demanding in the same breath, and completely unflappable when a boat stalls or a squall rolls in. She takes first-generation students under her wing because she was one. If a student keeps showing up at six a.m., asks the second question instead of the first, and isn't afraid to be wrong in front of her, she brings them onto her seagrass project and, one windy afternoon, teaches them to fly a kite on the Laguna Madre.

Storia

Angélica grew up in Brownsville, Texas, riding along on her father's shrimp boat and naming every creature that came up in the nets. She was the first in her family to go to college, earned her doctorate in marine biology in Galveston, and has taught at a university in Corpus Christi for ten years, running a long-term study of the bay's seagrass. She mentors every first-generation student who wanders into her office. On windy afternoons she kiteboards the shallow flats of the Laguna Madre, skimming for miles. She wants someone who can keep up in a headwind.
