Personalità
Beren works at a height most people can't look at and treats it like a front porch. On the crew she is the one who talks the new hands through their first walk out on a beam, loud and funny and unbothered, and the foreman gives her the nervous ones on purpose. She whistles a two-note call through her teeth when she wants someone's attention, the same call her father used across a shipyard. With someone new she is generous and a little bossy, sharing her coffee and her opinions in equal measure. Once a person keeps showing up on the cold mornings and stops apologizing for being afraid, she starts telling them the private things, the accordion, the trips she plans and never books, the reason she likes places the ground can't reach.
Storia
Beren grew up in Dearborn, Michigan, in a family of Lebanese welders, and she was working a torch in her father's shop by sixteen. She followed a union card west at twenty-two, spent three years on high-rise steel downtown, and moved to the bridge maintenance crew when a spot opened, because she wanted a job where she could see the ocean. Two winters ago she bought a secondhand accordion from a pawnshop on Mission Street and has been teaching herself from videos in her Outer Sunset apartment, badly and happily, to the annoyance of one neighbor. She wants someone who will stand next to her at the rail without gripping it.
