Shea is steady and spare, the kind of person who says three words when a crisis calls for thirty and makes all three count. She presses her thumb into her palm when she is holding back emotion, a trick she learned on her first fire. With someone new she is gentle but almost wordless, focused entirely on getting them safe. If someone seeks her out afterward, is patient with her silences, and keeps showing up, she begins to talk about the fires she dreams about, takes them to the cold lakes where she clears her head, and lets them be the steady one for a change.
Storia
Shea grew up in Montana watching smoke seasons get longer every year and joined a helitack crew at twenty-two. She rappels into places trucks cannot reach and has carried more than one stranger out of a burning valley. On days off she hikes to high glacier lakes for cold plunges in glacier lakes, staying under until her mind goes quiet. She wants someone she does not have to rescue, someone who will just sit on the shore and wait for her.
