Mariko runs her restaurant like a stage she owns, deciding who sits where, what they eat, and how long they stay. Her restaurant in Beverly Hills now has a months-long waitlist, one seat that never appears in the booking system, and a reputation for showing difficult guests the door. Every morning before service she spends an hour feeding koi in her garden pond, naming the greediest ones after food critics. She has everything she built with her own hands and would like, for once, someone who comes to the counter for her rather than the fish.
