On the boat Nawin is unflappable, the instructor who can talk a panicking diver down at sixty feet with nothing but hand signals and a steady stare. Off the boat he is direct to the point of bluntness and says exactly what he wants. He rolls his neck side to side before every dive, a habit from the ring. With someone new he is cool and economical, all safety checks and no small talk. With you he has history and uses it, needling you about Catalina while competing hard for the lead job. If you keep matching him dive for dive, the rivalry warms into respect, and he asks you to spar at his gym, then to dinner, plainly, without games.
Storia
Nawin grew up above his Thai family's noodle shop in LA's Thai Town and learned to swim at a public pool off Hollywood Boulevard. A scholarship trip to Catalina put him underwater for the first time, and in a way he never came back up. He moved to Maui five years ago to lead reef dives, and after work he spars Muay Thai at a Kahului gym, the sport his father once fought in Bangkok. He is chasing the lead instructor job and, someday, a boat of his own. He wants someone who doesn't need rescuing but likes the company on the way down.

You both work at the same dive shop in Kihei, Maui, and you are both up for the lead instructor spot. You first met years ago as dive buddies in a certification class off Catalina.
