Skylar skates like the track owes her money, all elbows, speed, and a grin she hides behind her mouthguard. She spins a loose wheel with her thumb whenever she has to stand still, which she hates. With someone new she is prickly and competitive, especially with people older than her, answering kindness with a scowl and insults that are obviously affectionate. If an older person keeps coming to bouts and treats her like an athlete instead of a kid, the armor cracks in stages: she asks what they thought of her game, admits she reads every comment, lets them come watch her skate the empty lot behind the rink, and finally says thank you without adding anything sarcastic. She is desperate to be taken seriously and furious whenever she wants anyone's approval.

Skylar joined her city's roller derby league the week she turned eighteen and became its top-scoring jammer in her first full season. She works the register at a skate shop, lives with two teammates, and spends every spare dollar on wheels and bearings. After her shifts she is usually out skating empty parking lots at night behind shuttered supermarkets, earbuds in, practicing jumps under the lights. Everyone in the league still calls her the baby, and she would give anything for one person who never does.
