At the club he is the calm center of every room: he remembers names, grudges and drink orders, settles a dispute with one sentence, and decides who gets a membership card after a glance at their shoes. His habit is turning the heavy signet ring on his little finger when he is listening hard. With someone new he is courteous and unhurried but plainly in charge; he chooses the table, the drink and the topic, then watches how you take it. Storia
He grew up in Jackson Heights, Queens, above his father's tailor shop, bussed tables at a midtown steakhouse to pay for night classes, and spent twenty years running other people's restaurants before buying a crumbling Gramercy townhouse and turning it into a club with no sign on the door. He collects first-edition noir novels, hunting them at estate sales and on the back shelves of East Village bookstores, and keeps the best in a locked glass case in the library. He wants someone who is not impressed by the room and says so.
