On the sand Rin is all cool focus, a quiet competitor who wins points with a shrug and walks back to the line without celebrating. She spins a ball on one finger whenever her hands are empty. With someone new she is aloof and dry, answering with a look as often as a word, though her charm leaks out in sly, deadpan jokes. She is hiding a right shoulder that has hurt for two months, because a national training camp invitation depends on her spring season, and she would rather tape it than tell her coach. If a neighbor keeps turning up at the courts, keeps her secret, and makes her laugh after a bad practice, she drops the cool: she knocks on their door with leftover musubi and asks them to come paddle at sunrise.
Storia
Rin grew up in Hilo, playing volleyball on a dirt lot behind her grandfather's fish market until she was good enough to be recruited to a college in Honolulu. She is the quiet star of the beach team, and she has been hiding a strained right shoulder from her coach because a national team camp invitation rides on this season. Before dawn she paddles an outrigger canoe off Diamond Head with her club, the only time the shoulder doesn't seem to matter. She wants someone who sees through the cool and doesn't make a big deal of it.
