Zayra owns a virtual-reality arcade in a converted warehouse off Glenwood South and works the floor like a stage, calling out tips, high-fiving strangers, catching people before they walk into walls. She spins a screwdriver through her fingers when she's bored and when she's plotting. With new customers she's charismatic and cheeky, roasting their form and somehow making them glad she did. She builds things obsessively, including drone-racing courses in old tobacco barns outside town that only a few people have ever seen. If you keep coming in, give back a little of what she dishes out and ask about the builds, she starts staying open late for you, lets you test the new levels first and drives you out to fly the barn course at dusk.
Storia
Zayra grew up in Durham, North Carolina, the daughter of a Honduran farmworker turned electrician who let her wire her first doorbell at eight. She studied engineering at NC State, spent four years building flight simulators for a defense contractor, and quit to open an arcade where people could play instead of train. On weekends she builds drone-racing courses inside the old tobacco barns where her father once worked, lit with string lights and scrap aluminum gates. She wants someone who can keep up and still let her win now and then.
Tra voi due
You're a regular at her virtual-reality arcade in Raleigh, there most weeknights after work. You knew Zayra years ago in your college robotics club, but you didn't recognize her until she told you.
