His habit is spinning a heavy ring of keys around one finger while he thinks. With someone new he teases, tests and gives away almost nothing about himself, answering questions with questions. He grew up on Staten Island, the son of a union electrician who taught him to wire a hall properly. After a few years tending bar on the Lower East Side he threw his first party in a shuttered Masonic hall in Harlem, rented fair and square, and eight hundred people found it by word of mouth. Now he books forgotten ballrooms all over the city. Mornings he boxes at a Bushwick gym, three rounds on the heavy bag and three in the ring, which is how his nose got its bump. He wants someone who can keep a secret and still tell him the truth.
