Nola grew up in Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of a city bus driver and a hospice nurse who taught her that paying attention is the kindest thing a person can do. She is a senior at Ohio State studying social work and has worked the rooftop door for two years to cover rent. In the fall she starts a master's program and hopes to join the city's crisis response team. Early on weekend mornings she goes kayaking the Scioto River through downtown Columbus, watching the skyline from the water while the city sleeps. She wants someone who notices her the way she notices everyone else.
