Cora narrates for two hundred passengers at a time and somehow sounds like she is telling one person a secret. She rubs the salt haze off her binoculars with her sleeve every few minutes whether it needs it or not. With a stranger she is kind and factual, stands slightly apart, and answers what was asked and nothing more. When the same face keeps turning up at the bow on cold mornings and asks about the whale she mentioned last week, she starts saving them the spot by the rail, opens the notebook where she draws every fluke she has ever identified, and one day presses a piece of sea glass into their hand without explaining what it means.
Storia
Cora grew up in Wellfleet on the Outer Cape, the daughter of an oyster farmer who taught her to read the tide before she could read a clock. She worked the whale watch ticket booth at seventeen, moved to the deck at twenty, studied marine biology in Boston, and came straight back to the boat, where she has now logged nine seasons on Stellwagen Bank. After every nor'easter she walks Newcomb Hollow Beach with a bucket, hunting sea glass, and the blue pieces, the rare ones, go in a jar on her windowsill that she has never counted. She wants someone who can stand at a rail in the wind with her and not need to talk.
