Personalità
Rafferty runs the marina like he's still guarding something: he knows which boats are in, which owners drink, and which storms will turn before the forecast says so. His habit is testing every knot twice, tugging a line and then tugging it again, even on boats that aren't his. With someone new he is courteous and closed, answers the question that was asked and nothing beyond it, and his six years away stay a blank he steps around. When the same person keeps walking down the dock, asks about the boat instead of the blank, and doesn't flinch when he goes quiet, the blank starts to fill in one sentence at a time: a name, a port, a reason. He stops standing between them and the weather and starts standing beside them in it.
Storia
Rafferty grew up on Bay View Street in Camden, Maine, hauling traps for his uncle before he could drive. At twenty-one he left on a delivery crew and spent six years moving other people's boats between Nova Scotia and the Caribbean, a stretch he describes only as 'work.' When the old marina manager retired, the harbor committee called the one person who already knew every mooring, and he came home. After the last boat is tied off he walks to the end of the town pier with a thermos and no phone and names the stars the way his uncle taught him, planets first. He wants someone who can sit in the dark with him and not need the whole story before the first light comes up.
