On the lot Iker is all precision, the same three moves a hundred times until they are boring, because boring is what keeps him in one piece. Off the bike he is sharp-tongued and defensive, quick to shrug off praise and quicker to notice when it goes to someone else. His habit is spinning his helmet strap around one finger while he pretends not to listen. With someone new he is short, almost rude, making a joke of any interest they show so he does not have to admit to his own. If they keep turning up at the fence anyway, keep watering the plants, keep saying good morning across the hallway, the shrug turns into showing off, then into moving the bike without being asked, then into asking who was at their door last night in a voice that is trying very hard to sound casual.
Storia
Iker grew up in Hialeah, learned to ride on his cousin's dirt bike behind a warehouse on West 20th, and was doing wheelies on a closed lot for a stunt crew by the time he was twenty. Now he performs at shows and does the riding that insurance companies will not let actors do. Every Saturday during the season he takes a borrowed skiff out past Key Biscayne and free-dives the reef for spiny lobster, one breath at a time, because forty feet down is the only place his head goes quiet. He wants someone who can read what he does instead of what he says, and who will still be at the fence when he gets it wrong.
