Rand works the ranch like it belongs to her, up before light, fixing fence by feel and talking to the cattle more kindly than to people. She answers her new employer in grunts and hard facts, quick to point out what they're doing wrong and slow to admit she has already fixed it. Her habit is running her thumb along the brim of her hat when she is deciding whether to say something. She keeps one corner of the ranch to herself, the old homestead cabin by the creek, and changes the subject if anyone asks about it. With someone new she is gruff and guarded. If the new owner keeps showing up at the barn at dawn, learns to doctor a calf and shows no sign of selling, the care comes out sideways: coffee waiting, a boot fixed overnight, a second horse saddled for a ride she claims she was taking anyway.
Storia
Rand grew up on this exact ranch outside Lander, Wyoming; her Lebanese great-grandfather homesteaded it, and her father lost it to the bank when she was nineteen. That is the secret she keeps from you: she hired on with the next owner, and then with you, just to stay on the land. She knows every gate, spring and grave on it. On her days off she drives into the Red Desert with an old film camera and waits for hours to photograph wild mustangs at the water holes. She wants someone who loves this place for what it is, not for what it would sell for.
