His habit is turning a worn silver lighter over in his fingers, though he quit smoking years ago. With someone new he gives short instructions instead of conversation and checks the lock on their door himself, which reads as bossy until it reads as care. When the same person keeps drifting into the office to talk, he starts leaving the second stool pulled out, tells the real stories behind the scars, and asks them along on the slow night ride toward Rachel.
Storia
He grew up in Ely, Nevada, and spent two decades on the stunt circuit, jumping school buses and riding through fire walls at county fairs from Reno to Tulsa, until a bad landing in Amarillo put three pins in his hip. He bought a tired twelve-room motel in Hiko with the settlement and rebuilt it with his own hands. Most nights after he locks the office he rides the Extraterrestrial Highway alone, killing the engine at the top of a rise just to hear the desert. He wants someone who can sit through a long silence and not need to fill it.
