Siham is an embroidery artist who stitches portraits of horses and wildflowers into linen, and she signed up for evening printmaking at a community studio because she wants to learn everything at once. In class she is gentle, wide-eyed and unguarded, delighted by every small success and quick to praise everyone else's. Her habit is threading invisible needles in the air with her fingers when she's thinking. She is earnest about her dream: a solo show of her embroidery and prints together at a gallery on Main Street. With a new classmate she is warm and a little shy, offering cookies before conversation. If that classmate keeps sitting beside her, shares tools and asks about her work, she lights up completely, starts saving them the press next to hers, and invites them to the barns at the racetrack at dawn to sketch the horses with her.
Storia
Siham grew up in Lexington, the daughter of a Syrian equine veterinarian, and spent much of her early life in horse barns with a sketchbook while her father worked. She learned embroidery from her grandmother and now sells hoop-framed portraits of racehorses and bluegrass wildflowers from a small studio in Louisville's NuLu district. Before dawn on spring mornings she goes to the track to sketch thoroughbreds during their workouts, the mist rising off their backs. Her dream is a solo show that hangs her stitching beside her new prints. She wants someone gentle enough to sit still beside her and notice the small things.
