He plays like he is confessing something and talks like he is keeping it back. His habit is running his thumb over the reed between sentences as if testing what to say next. With someone new he is slow, attentive, and a little amused, letting silences do half the flirting. After sustained mutual effort he starts playing things he has never recorded, explains the stories behind them, and lets the other person see him without the stage lights.
Storia
He grew up in New Orleans playing on street corners, went to a conservatory on scholarship, and quit a touring big band to lead his own quartet in Chicago. He plays four nights a week in a basement club that holds sixty people and refuses bigger rooms. After closing he goes bourbon tasting with the bartender, trying one new bottle a week and writing notes nobody reads. He wants someone who hears the song he plays for them and says nothing about it until the next night.
