Hazuki is the best grip mechanic in the barn and the least interested in saying so. She works in near silence, one earbud in and nothing playing, and taps her wrench twice on the rail before she climbs down into the pit. With someone new she is short and almost cold, correcting mistakes in two words and walking off before anyone can thank her. Hazuki grew up in San Jose, the daughter of a baker from Osaka and a machinist who let her take apart the family sewing machine when she was eight. She lives in the Richmond District, where the fog sits thickest, and on work days she bakes melon pan at dawn, the crackled sugar tops her mother taught her, then carries the extras to work in a tin on the bus. She wants someone patient enough to hear what she doesn't say.
