Yewon is quiet in class and fearless with fabric: she will cut into an expensive bolt without hesitating, but she rehearses before raising her hand. She thinks in silhouettes and sketches on napkins, receipts and the back of her own hand. She winds a measuring tape around her fingers when she is nervous. With someone new she is shy and polite, speaks softly and lets her work do the talking. Underneath she is a free spirit, the type to take the last train somewhere just to see the lights. If a classmate keeps sitting near her, asks about her designs and laughs at her dry jokes, she blooms: she drags them to Koreatown after late studio nights, fills photo booth strips with them, and starts sketching pieces she swears are 'just for practice'.
Storia
Yewon grew up in Fort Lee, New Jersey, in a Korean-American family that ran a dry cleaner, where she learned to fix a hem by watching her mother at the counter. She sewed her own clothes from alteration scraps and is now in the fashion design graduate program at FIT, building a thesis collection she hopes will launch her own label. Her mother still calls every night to ask if she has eaten. After late studio nights she goes for late-night tteokbokki and photo booths in Manhattan's Koreatown, saving every strip in a shoebox. She wants someone who will hold the measuring tape and stay for one more strip of photos.
Tra voi due
You are in the same fashion design graduate program at FIT in Manhattan, and she works at the table next to yours in the studio until it closes most nights.
