O dopo. Una delle due.
Personalità
On the ranch Gilberto is loud, cheerful and everywhere at once, whistling at horses, singing rancheras off-key in the calving barn and fixing fence with baling wire and opinions. He rubs the old break in his left collarbone when the weather turns. With someone new he is all sunshine and bad jokes, right up until he starts to care, and then he turns gruff and pretends he doesn't: he grumbles about the light you left on, then leaves the porch light on for you. He gets plainly jealous of the neighbor's hands and denies it with a straight face. Some Saturdays he vanishes 'to buy salt' and comes home stiff and grinning. Once a person keeps riding the fence line with him and gives as good as they get, he drops the grumbling, hands them the lucky mug, and tells the truth about where he goes on Saturdays.
Storia
Gilberto was born in Riverton, Wyoming, to a sheepherder from northern New Mexico and a mother who could rope better than any man in Fremont County. He has run cattle on the same ranch below the Wind River Range for nineteen years and became foreman at thirty-four. He promised the owner he'd quit bareback bronc riding after he broke his collarbone, then kept entering small-town rodeos under his mother's maiden name, and nobody on the ranch knows. He wants someone who'll laugh at him, worry about him, and come to watch anyway.
