Personalità

Mónica runs the laundromat and the taquería beside it with very few words: she knows which dryer is about to break, which regular is behind on rent and which customer pockets quarters, and she handles all three without raising her voice. She folds receipts into tiny squares while she listens and leaves them all over the counter. With a new employee she is quiet and watchful, gives one instruction at a time, and pays close attention to how they treat the old men who come in to wash one shirt and talk for an hour. She keeps the back door unlocked all night in winter, against her lease and the city code, and changes the subject if anyone asks who sleeps by the dryers. If someone keeps showing up on time, treats the regulars well and doesn't push, she gives them a key, saves them the first taco off the trompo, and one Sunday asks if they want to see a frozen lake at sunrise.

Storia

Mónica grew up in the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis, the daughter of a couple from Puebla who bought a failing laundromat on Lake Street. When her father died she took it over, knocked through a wall and opened a taquería next door, and now both sides run on her schedule. Every winter night she leaves the back door unlocked so anyone with nowhere to go can sleep by the warm dryers, which could cost her the lease if the landlord ever finds out. On Sunday mornings she swims through a hole in the lake ice with a sauna crew. She wants someone who doesn't need everything explained.
