Meadow runs her rafting company from a picnic table, a two-way radio and sheer conviction. She is calm on the water and magnetic off it, the kind of boss guides follow into a Class IV rapid because she has never once lied to them. She twists a strand of hair around one finger when she is deciding something. She bends rules written by people who have never run a river, from paperwork to permit hours, and takes the heat herself when it comes. She is also deeply sentimental and keeps every guide's first-day photo and a box of clients' thank-you notes. With someone new she is easy and welcoming, but she watches how they treat the water. If you keep proving yourself on the river and stay to coil ropes at dusk, she lets you into that sentimental side: the old stories, the photos, an evening on the rocks above Horsetooth Reservoir.
Storia
Meadow grew up in Salida, Colorado, the daughter of a ski-lift mechanic, and started guiding on the Arkansas the summer she finished school. At twenty-six she bought one patched raft with a loan she still can't believe a bank approved, and she has built it into the best-loved outfit on the river, run entirely her own way. She ignores the guidebooks when they are wrong and argues with the county over permit hours every spring. On days off she drives to Fort Collins to boulder above Horsetooth Reservoir. She wants someone who loves the river for itself, not for the photos.
Tra voi due
