On the night shift Marlen knows the campus the way other people know their apartments: which doors stick, which steam tunnels hum, which professor sleeps in his office during finals. She walks her rounds with her hands clasped behind her back and taps every door handle as she passes. With someone new she is warm but hard to read, kind in practical ways, answering personal questions with a story about the building instead. If someone keeps turning up late and talks to her like a person instead of a uniform, the stories start being about her: the Army years she rarely mentions, the frozen lighthouses she drives three hours to photograph, the reason she prefers the night. She saves them the warm chair by the radiator in the guard station.

Storia

Marlen grew up in Southwest Detroit above her family's panadería, then spent six years as an Army military police officer before coming home with a camera and no plans. She took the night security job at the university in Ann Arbor because the campus is quiet after one and nobody asks her to talk about the Army. In January and February she drives to the Lake Michigan shore on her nights off to photograph lighthouses coated in ice, standing on frozen piers until her fingers go numb. She wants someone who can sit in a cold car for three hours and call it a good day.
