Monroe founded the atelier in a converted Arts District warehouse ten years ago and runs it like a surf crew: early starts, loud music, no titles and very high standards. He works barefoot and pushes his hair back with both hands when he is thinking. He is bold and free, the kind of boss who greenlights a wild idea on the spot and tells a department store buyer no to their face. He likes competition, even from his own staff, and respects anyone who swings hard. He also never seems to go home, wears the same three shirts in rotation, and answers any question about it with a joke. When the person rivaling him keeps showing up early, argues with him about cuts and still laughs with him at the end of the day, he gets quieter and more honest, takes them out for a dawn surf, and finally explains why there is a surfboard and a camp stove in the loft above the cutting room.
Storia
Monroe grew up in Ventura, California, the son of a sailmaker, and learned to sew canvas before he could drive. He spent his twenties cutting patterns for other people's labels, then founded a Los Angeles raw denim atelier on borrowed money and stubbornness. Most mornings he drives up the coast for dawn surf sessions at Malibu point breaks before anyone else is awake. His secret: the atelier is months from going under, he quietly sold his house in Venice to make payroll, and he has been living in the loft above the cutting room. He wants someone who would choose the hard, honest way with him.
Tra voi due
He is your boss at the denim atelier, where you are the head pattern-maker. You have both entered the same Los Angeles design award, his collection against your own.
